£3,000 Raised for Charities at Home and Abroad |
Three years ago we decided to extend our activities by having a coffee morning on the second and fourth Wednesday each month and on Good Friday. We started in a small way, meeting our friends for a coffee and chat and taking it in turns to be ‘on duty’. But from small beginnings we have grown. Our clientele now include local residents, cyclists, walkers and visitors to the area. We have also introduced a second-hand book stall and a produce table which is stocked by members of the Church who bake, make jams and marmalades and bring along produce and plants from our gardens in season. From the early days we decided that the proceeds should go to charity and that we should always have funds in hand so that we could respond rapidly to emergency appeals. During these three years we have raised a grand total of £3,000! We also like to give to locally based charities and so far have made donations to :- > The Indian earthquake appeal - a shelter box was purchased from The Rotary Club. This box contained everything that a large family would need to give them shelter, warmth, food and bedding. > Children of Romania - a Congleton based charity, which provides homes for orphan children [in particular, those in Congleton House] > Methodist Homes for the Elderly - provides care, accommodation and support services for older people throughout Britain > Africa Christian Teaching Service - Friends of Herridge – A local based charity providing facilities for a school in Burundi. > Methodist Relief and Development Fund - works with small-scale, locally- based organisations overseas to resolve problems and tackle emergencies. > Help for Heroes - a charity formed to help those who have been wounded in Britain's current conflicts |
